US health authorities have linked a batch of imported jalapeño peppers from Mexico to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened hundreds of people across the country, prompting a product recall and renewed concerns about food safety.
According to media reports, the outbreak has affected 345 people in 27 US states, with 36 patients hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Imported jalapeños identified as source
Health officials said the outbreak has been traced to a specific shipment of jalapeño peppers imported from Mexico’s Sinaloa state.
The affected peppers were distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, which has begun recalling the potentially contaminated products after the outbreak was identified.
Salmonella symptoms and health risks
Salmonella infection commonly causes:
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps or abdominal pain
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting in some cases
Health experts warn that young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of developing severe illness and may require medical treatment.
Food safety remains in focus
The latest outbreak comes shortly after a separate Cyclospora outbreak in the United States linked to leafy greens, bringing renewed attention to food safety practices involving fresh produce.
US health authorities continue to monitor the situation while the affected products are being removed from the market.
