Pakistan’s Weekly Inflation Rises 0.28% as Chicken, Onions Lead Price Increases

Pakistan’s weekly inflation increased by 0.28% during the first week of August 2026, reversing the decline recorded in the previous week, according to the latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The bureau’s weekly report shows that annual inflation, measured through the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), stood at 9.29%, while prices of 20 essential commodities increased, nine items became cheaper, and 22 items remained unchanged.

Food prices drive weekly inflation

According to the PBS, chicken prices rose by 9.19%, while onions increased by 10.14%, making them the biggest contributors to the weekly rise in inflation.

Other items that recorded price increases include:

  • Gram pulse: 2.43%
  • Red chilli powder: 1.01%
  • Mustard oil: 0.99%
  • Tea: 0.57%
  • Wheat flour: 0.52%
  • Vegetable ghee: 0.37%
  • Firewood: 0.32%
  • Washing soap: 0.08%

Tomatoes, LPG and fuel prices decline

Several essential commodities registered price declines during the same period.

According to the report:

  • Tomatoes: 6.82%
  • LPG: 1.90%
  • High-speed diesel: 1.66%
  • Petrol: 0.63%
  • Sugar: 0.51%
  • Plain roti: 0.29%
  • Eggs: 0.09%
  • Potatoes: 0.09%
  • Bananas: 1.20%

Inflation affects all income groups

The PBS said inflation increased across all income categories covered under the Sensitive Price Indicator.

For households earning up to Rs17,732 per month, annual inflation reached 9.51%, while those earning between Rs17,733 and Rs22,888 experienced annual inflation of 9.87%.

Households with monthly incomes between Rs22,889 and Rs29,517 recorded annual inflation of 8.79%, while those earning Rs29,518 to Rs44,175 saw inflation at 8.96%.

For households earning above Rs44,176 per month, annual inflation stood at 9.00%.
