NEW YORK, September 25 — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for a diplomatic solution to tensions surrounding Iran during talks on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The two foreign ministers met during the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, where regional security and escalating tensions in the Middle East have featured prominently in diplomatic discussions.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov and Araghchi exchanged views on key regional and international developments, with particular attention to the situation surrounding Iran.
The two sides said diplomacy remained the only viable path toward resolving the crisis and criticised recent actions by the United States and Israel, which Moscow and Tehran described as unlawful.
Their meeting came amid renewed international efforts to contain regional tensions and keep diplomatic channels open over Iran. Tehran has maintained that it remains open to diplomacy, while insisting that negotiations must respect Iran’s interests and security concerns.
Lavrov and Araghchi also discussed progress on bilateral agreements reached during talks between the Russian and Iranian presidents in Bishkek on September 1, 2026.
The ministers reviewed steps toward implementing those understandings as Moscow and Tehran continue to deepen political coordination and bilateral cooperation.
They also discussed the schedule for upcoming Russia-Iran engagements at different levels, signalling that further diplomatic contacts between the two countries are expected.
The meeting took place as world leaders and senior officials gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly’s 81st Session. The General Debate began on September 22, with conflicts, regional security and diplomacy among the major issues under discussion.
