More than 200 volunteers removed approximately two tons of solid waste during a large-scale Rawal Dam cleanliness drive organized by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) in collaboration with Jazz World.
The campaign, held on July 22, was launched under the direction of former CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Muhammad Ali Randhawa to promote environmental protection, improve waste management, and raise public awareness about keeping one of Islamabad’s key water reservoirs free from pollution.
Volunteers Collect 80 Bags of Waste
The clean-up campaign was led by MCI Chief Officer Dr. Anum Fatima and brought together volunteers from CDA, MCI, Jazz World, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and civil society.
According to organizers, participants collected 80 bags of garbage and cleared nearly two tons of solid waste from the surroundings of Rawal Dam.
Authorities Highlight Long-Term Pollution Control
Speaking at the event, Dr. Anum Fatima said the initiative was carried out to promote environmental responsibility and encourage proper waste disposal practices.
She said the CDA and MCI, in coordination with the Government of Punjab and other relevant institutions, are implementing long-term measures to reduce pollution entering Rawal Dam.
These measures include the installation of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to treat wastewater before it reaches the reservoir, helping to improve water quality and protect Islamabad’s drinking water source.
Public Urged to Help Protect Rawal Dam
Dr. Anum Fatima urged residents not to dispose of waste in streams and drainage channels, particularly those flowing from Bhara Kahu and Murree, which are among the main sources of pollution entering Rawal Dam.
Officials emphasized that public participation is essential for protecting the reservoir and maintaining a cleaner urban environment.
CDA Reaffirms Commitment to a Cleaner Capital
At the conclusion of the campaign, the CDA and MCI thanked Jazz World and all volunteers for their participation.
The authorities said they will continue partnering with public and private organizations to organize similar environmental initiatives aimed at making Islamabad cleaner, greener, and more sustainable.
