Islamabad, 14th October,2026: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has urged private seed companies to reduce wheat seed prices and directed the National Seed Development and Regulatory Authority (NSDRA) to ensure uninterrupted inter-provincial movement of seed ahead of the sowing season.

The minister issued the directions while chairing a high-level meeting with representatives of private seed companies and NSDRA to review wheat seed prices and supply arrangements across provinces.

Rana Tanveer said lower seed prices were necessary to make certified wheat seed more affordable for farmers, particularly small growers facing rising costs of fertiliser, irrigation and other agricultural inputs.

The meeting noted that timely availability of affordable seed remains critical for farmers making purchasing decisions ahead of wheat sowing.

The minister also directed NSDRA to coordinate with provincial authorities and seed suppliers to address obstacles affecting inter-provincial movement and ensure seed reaches farmers within the appropriate sowing period.

Officials stressed that smooth movement across provincial boundaries would be important for maintaining supply in areas where local availability may be limited.

The meeting also highlighted the need for clear information on seed varieties, certification, pack weight and prices to help farmers make informed purchasing decisions.

It was observed that lower prices alone would not be sufficient unless accompanied by reliable seed quality and timely availability.

The discussions focused on reducing seed costs and maintaining uninterrupted supplies across provinces to support timely wheat cultivation and strengthen national food security.
