Indian actor and reality television personality Rakhi Sawant has spoken about her faith, saying she is proud to be Muslim and regularly offers five daily prayers, while responding to criticism over her religious identity.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Rakhi Sawant said she performs the five daily prayers, recites the Quran, and has completed Umrah eight times. Her remarks have renewed public discussion about her conversion to Islam and the reactions it continues to generate on social media.
Rakhi Sawant Reflects on Her Faith
Sawant said she accepted Islam in May 2022 when she married her former husband, Adil Khan Durrani. In January 2023, she publicly announced her conversion and said she had adopted the name Fatima.
Although the marriage ended after about six months, Sawant said her faith has remained unchanged. She stated that she regularly offers Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha prayers, in addition to Tahajjud, and continues to recite the Quran.
Responds to Criticism Over Religious Identity
Addressing criticism from some people who question her faith because of her work in Bollywood and her choice of clothing, Sawant said faith is a personal relationship between an individual and God.
She said her profession is a source of livelihood and helps her meet financial responsibilities, but it does not define her religious beliefs. According to Sawant, no one has the authority to decide whether she is a Muslim based on her career or public image.
Her comments prompted mixed reactions on social media, where users expressed differing opinions about her statements and religious journey.
