Rs1 million aid announced for families after six women killed in Rahim Yar Khan BISP roof collapse

ISLAMABAD, March 16: At least six women were killed and several others injured after the roof of a private bank’s payment centre collapsed in Rahim Yar Khan on Monday morning, where beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) had gathered along with other women, according to initial reports.

Officials said the women were present at the payment point to receive financial assistance when the structure reportedly gave way, causing panic and multiple casualties. Several injured women were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Chairperson BISP Senator Rubina Khalid expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

On the directive of President Asif Ali Zardari, the BISP chairperson departed for Rahim Yar Khan to assess the situation on the ground and meet the affected families.

Inquiry committee formed

According to BISP officials, a high-level committee from the programme’s headquarters has been sent to Rahim Yar Khan to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident. The committee has been directed to submit its findings within 24 hours.

Authorities said the inquiry will examine possible negligence and identify those responsible for the collapse. A notice has also been issued to the partner bank involved, and officials indicated that a heavy fine may be imposed if negligence is established.

Financial assistance announced

BISP has announced financial assistance for the victims of the incident. Families of the deceased women will receive Rs1 million each, while injured women will be provided Rs300,000 in compensation.

Officials said the payments are expected to be completed by Tuesday.

Senator Rubina Khalid said the investigation would be conducted transparently and strict legal action would be taken against representatives of the partner bank if negligence is confirmed. She added that the programme would extend full support to the affected families.
