Portugal’s newly appointed head coach Jorge Jesus has said Cristiano Ronaldo will continue to be considered for the national team as long as he remains fit and available for selection.
Speaking at his first press conference since taking charge, Jesus said Ronaldo’s place in the squad would depend on his ability to contribute on the field, reaffirming the veteran forward’s importance to Portuguese football.
Jorge Jesus Yet to Discuss International Future With Ronaldo
Jesus said he has not yet spoken with Ronaldo since his appointment but expects to meet him soon to discuss the forward’s international future.
He added that Ronaldo would never be a problem for the national team or the coaching staff, describing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as an icon of Portuguese football whose achievements will remain part of the country’s sporting history.
Coach Reflects on Working With Ronaldo
The 71-year-old coach previously managed Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, where he worked with Ronaldo and guided the team to the league title.
Jesus said Ronaldo had told him on several occasions that he hoped to finish his club career with Al Nassr.
Ronaldo Yet to Confirm International Retirement
The 41-year-old forward faced criticism following Portugal’s FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, which ended with a Round of 16 defeat to Spain. After the tournament, Ronaldo suggested it may have been his final World Cup but has not officially announced his retirement from international football.
Jorge Jesus is expected to lead Portugal through the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco.
