Pakistani-origin midfielder Zidane Iqbal made history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by becoming the first footballer of Pakistani heritage to appear in a men’s World Cup match.
Iqbal came on for Iraq in the 59th minute during their opening match against Norway, which Iraq lost 4-1. The moment was significant for Pakistani football fans because Pakistan has never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, but a player with Pakistani roots has now featured on football’s biggest stage.
The 23-year-old midfielder was born in Manchester, England. His father is from Pakistan, while his mother is from Iraq, giving him eligibility to represent England, Pakistan or Iraq at international level.
Iqbal chose to represent Iraq and has since become part of the national team setup. His appearance against Norway added a historic chapter for players of Pakistani heritage in global football.
According to reports, Iraq’s football community and federation played an important role in encouraging Iqbal to represent the country. He has previously said that the support and interest shown by Iraqi fans influenced his decision.
Football observers have noted that Pakistan had also followed Iqbal’s progress, but Iraq offered a stronger international pathway because of its more developed football structure and competitive standing.
Iqbal has said he hopes his journey can inspire young Asian and Arab players to pursue their football ambitions. His rise from Manchester to the World Cup has been seen as a symbolic moment for representation in the sport.
Although Iraq began their campaign with a defeat to Norway, Iqbal’s appearance made the match memorable for many Pakistani supporters. For the first time, a footballer of Pakistani heritage played in a men’s FIFA World Cup match.
