Islamabad — Pakistan is accelerating its shift toward electric mobility, with officials projecting that the number of electric vehicles in the country could reach 2.2 million by 2030, supported by a new government subsidy program worth Rs9 billion.

The update was shared in a briefing to the Senate Standing Committee on Industries and Production, where officials outlined progress on the country’s electric vehicle (EV) policy and future expansion plans. The initiative aims to expand cleaner transport options and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

According to the briefing, more than 12,800 electric vehicles and around 160,000 electric motorcycles have already been assembled or produced locally, reflecting growing participation from the domestic auto industry in the EV sector.

To support further adoption, the government has allocated Rs9 billion in subsidies for the purchase of two- and three-wheeler electric vehicles. Under the scheme, buyers of electric motorcycles are being offered financial support of up to Rs80,000 per unit.

Officials said the policy is expected to significantly increase EV adoption in coming years, with a larger share of urban transport shifting toward electric alternatives.

Economic analysts noted that the move could help reduce fuel import costs and contribute to lowering air pollution, while also making transport more affordable for lower- and middle-income households.
