MUMBAI: Indian actress Charmila has opened up about painful experiences in her personal and professional life, saying failed relationships deeply affected her and alleging that she faced inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry.
In a recent interview, Charmila said her first love ended painfully and that the experience had a severe impact on her mental health. She revealed that she attempted to take her own life by cutting her wrist at the time, but was saved by her mother.
Charmila identified actor Babu Antony as her first love. The two reportedly met while working on the film Kadal and grew closer after initially becoming friends and appearing together in several films.
According to Charmila, Babu Antony later moved to the United States and did not return, leaving her devastated. She said the experience had a lasting emotional impact on her.
Two Marriages Ended in Divorce
After her relationship with Babu Antony ended, Charmila married Kishore Satya. She said the marriage lasted around four years before ending in divorce.
Charmila alleged that her husband pressured her to stop working in films after their marriage. She said she even turned down an opportunity to act opposite actor Vikram because of that pressure.
She later married a software engineer, Rajesh, but the second marriage also ended in divorce. Differences over the upbringing of their son were among the issues that emerged between the couple.
Reflecting on her relationships, Charmila said she repeatedly entered romantic relationships during different periods of her life but failed to learn sufficiently from her previous experiences.
Allegations of Harassment in Film Industry
Charmila also spoke about her experiences in the Malayalam film industry, alleging that she encountered inappropriate behavior from several people.
She claimed that 28 individuals behaved inappropriately toward her and also accused a producer of attempting to harass her. She further alleged that a director sought her cooperation in connection with an offer to work in a film.
The allegations are based on Charmila’s account in the interview and have not been independently established.
Charmila is no longer as active in films as she was during the peak of her career, although she continues to make occasional appearances in movies and television programs.
