Pakistan, Ethiopia agree to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and expand bilateral ties

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to deepen parliamentary cooperation and strengthen bilateral relations across key sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, aviation and culture, during a meeting between senior officials in Islamabad.

The understanding was reached during talks between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba, and Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani. The meeting focused on expanding Pakistan-Ethiopia relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.

According to an official statement, both sides reviewed the progress made in bilateral engagement and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation through stronger institutional and diplomatic links.

Ambassador Dr. Oumer highlighted the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Ethiopia, describing it as rooted in shared history, cultural connections and common values. He noted that Ethiopia’s position as the headquarters of the African Union and a gateway to African markets offers opportunities for Pakistan to expand its economic and diplomatic engagement across the continent.

Focus on trade, agriculture and people-to-people ties

During the meeting, Senate Chairman Gilani praised Ethiopia’s recent economic progress and ongoing reform initiatives. He emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people contacts through cultural exchanges and religious tourism.

Gilani also highlighted Pakistan’s agricultural potential and stressed the need for greater cooperation in agricultural development, knowledge sharing and technical collaboration to support sustainable growth in both countries.

Parliamentary exchanges to boost cooperation

The two sides agreed to promote parliamentary diplomacy through the establishment of parliamentary friendship groups and the exchange of parliamentary delegations.

Officials said these initiatives are expected to strengthen institutional cooperation, improve mutual understanding and create new avenues for collaboration between the legislatures of Pakistan and Ethiopia.

The meeting reflects growing engagement between Islamabad and Addis Ababa as both countries seek to expand cooperation in economic, diplomatic and parliamentary spheres.
