ISLAMABAD, June 4: Ethiopia and Pakistan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of culture and tourism as both countries seek to deepen people-to-people ties and expand bilateral engagement beyond traditional diplomatic relations.
The understanding was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Oumer Hussien Oba, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The discussion focused on enhancing collaboration through cultural exchanges, tourism initiatives, delegation visits and knowledge-sharing programs.
According to officials, both sides explored ways to promote greater interaction between their peoples by leveraging cultural heritage, tourism opportunities and institutional cooperation.
During the meeting, Ambassador Oba highlighted the longstanding relations between Ethiopia and Pakistan and emphasized the role of Ethiopian Airlines in improving connectivity between the two countries and facilitating travel between Pakistan and African destinations.
The ambassador also briefed the minister on Ethiopia’s cultural and historical heritage, including its traditional festivals, unique calendar system, and diverse ethnic and linguistic landscape.
Proposal for cultural cooperation framework
To further institutionalize cooperation, Ambassador Oba proposed signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the cultural ministries of Ethiopia and Pakistan. The proposed agreement would support joint initiatives in culture and tourism and encourage closer collaboration between relevant institutions.
Minister Khichi welcomed the proposal and expressed support for strengthening cultural relations between the two countries. He acknowledged the growing bilateral relationship and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding cooperation in areas that promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Ethiopia and Pakistan to broaden engagement in cultural diplomacy and tourism as part of their wider bilateral partnership.
