ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet has approved the National Housing Policy 2026, nearly 25 years after the country’s previous national housing policy was approved in 2001.
The new policy aims to promote access to adequate, affordable and sustainable housing for people across Pakistan while improving access to housing opportunities, basic services and supporting infrastructure.
The National Housing Policy 2026 covers key areas related to housing and urban development and is structured around nine major thematic areas.
Federal Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Hussain Pirzada congratulated the ministry’s Policy and Planning Wing for preparing the policy document.
He said all relevant stakeholders were consulted during the formulation of the National Housing Policy, describing its approval as a historic milestone for the ministry.
The minister said Pakistan had been without a comprehensive national housing policy for almost a quarter of a century and that the new framework would provide direction for addressing the country’s housing shortage and growing urban challenges.
According to Pirzada, the policy is expected to support affordable and sustainable residential development across the country and improve access to essential housing-related facilities and infrastructure.
The approval comes as Pakistan continues to face significant housing and urban development challenges, making coordinated policy measures important for expanding affordable housing opportunities and improving living conditions.
