ISLAMABAD, August 3, 2026: Oil & Gas Development Company Limited has signed an agreement with Canada-based Synergetic Oil Tools Inc. to deploy advanced flow assurance technology at heavy crude oil wells in Pakistan.
The partnership will introduce Synergetic’s Passive Energy Tool technology at selected OGDC wells, with the aim of improving production from reservoirs containing highly viscous crude oil.
The contract was signed at OGDC headquarters in Islamabad in the presence of Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ambassador Tarik Ali Khan and OGDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Hayat Lak.
Synergetic Oil Tools President and CEO Brian Herman joined the ceremony virtually, while senior officials from OGDC, the Canadian High Commission and the Canadian technology company were also present.
New Technology to Improve Heavy Oil Flow
Under the agreement, Synergetic will deploy its Passive Energy Tool technology to improve the movement of heavy crude through OGDC wells.
The technology is designed to optimise fluid characteristics, reduce the need for repeated workovers and cut well downtime. It is also expected to lower operating costs and reduce the use of production chemicals.
Heavy oil reservoirs often present technical challenges because highly viscous crude does not flow as easily as lighter oil. These conditions can increase maintenance requirements and limit production efficiency.
OGDC expects the new technology to improve flow assurance and help maximise output from mature and technically challenging fields.
OGDC Eyes Lower Costs and Higher Production
Speaking at the ceremony, Ahmed Hayat Lak said the partnership reflected OGDC’s focus on using new technology to address production challenges in heavy oil reservoirs.
He said the company would continue working with international technology providers to improve efficiency and increase recovery from mature fields.
Lak expressed confidence that the technology would reduce workover requirements and operating costs while improving overall production performance.
Pakistan-Canada Energy Cooperation Expands
Canadian High Commissioner Tarik Ali Khan said the agreement highlighted growing cooperation between Pakistan and Canada in the energy and critical minerals sectors.
He said the deployment of the technology could support the development of Pakistan’s upstream oil industry and strengthen commercial ties between the two countries.
The agreement forms part of OGDC’s wider strategy to adopt advanced production technologies, improve operational performance and attract international expertise into Pakistan’s oil and gas sector.
The company is seeking to increase recovery from existing fields at a time when Pakistan remains focused on strengthening domestic energy production and reducing pressure on imported fuel supplies.
