The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to three scientists whose groundbreaking research has helped reveal how light-sensitive proteins can be used to study and control brain cells.
The prize has been jointly awarded to Karl Deisseroth of the United States, and Germany’s Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel.
According to the Nobel Committee, the scientists were recognized for discoveries related to optogenetics and light-sensitive proteins, work that has transformed the ability of researchers to investigate the functioning of nerve cells.
Their research has contributed to the development of techniques that allow scientists to activate or inhibit specific neurons using light. This has provided new ways to study how the brain processes and organizes memories, emotions and behavior.
Breakthrough in Optogenetics
Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel were instrumental in discovering and characterizing channelrhodopsins, light-sensitive proteins that can respond to illumination.
Karl Deisseroth subsequently helped turn these biological discoveries into powerful tools for controlling the activity of nerve cells with light, laying the foundation for modern optogenetics.
The technique has become an important research tool in neuroscience, allowing scientists to investigate specific neural circuits with a level of precision that was previously difficult to achieve.
The three laureates will share the Nobel Prize monetary award of SEK 12 million.
Nobel Prize Announcements Continue This Week
The Medicine prize is traditionally the first of the annual Nobel awards to be announced.
The Physics Nobel Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 6, followed by the Chemistry Nobel Prize on October 7 and the Nobel Prize in Literature on October 8.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, while the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences is scheduled for October 12.
The 2026 Medicine Nobel Prize continues a long tradition of recognizing research that has fundamentally changed understanding of human biology and disease.
