Netflix’s new crime drama film UNABOMBER has attracted widespread attention following its release, reportedly reaching the top spot in global film rankings just a day after debuting on the streaming platform.
The film, released on September 25, stars Russell Crowe, Jacob Tremblay and Shailene Woodley. It explores the life of Ted Kaczynski, the American domestic terrorist known as the Unabomber, focusing on his early years, his time at Harvard and the investigation that eventually led authorities to him.
According to FlixPatrol, the film has also recorded strong rankings in several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Canada and Germany.
The story opens with a bombing but then moves back to Kaczynski’s early years. In 1958, when he was a young student entering Harvard, there was little indication that his life would eventually become the focus of one of the longest investigations in the history of the FBI.
Jacob Tremblay portrays the younger Kaczynski, while Russell Crowe plays Professor Henry Murray, a significant figure during Kaczynski’s time at Harvard.
Writers and executive producers Sam Chalsen and Nelson Graves use Kaczynski’s Harvard years as an important foundation for the story. The narrative moves between two periods, examining Kaczynski’s personality and developing ideas alongside the FBI investigation into the attacks attributed to him.
Who Was Ted Kaczynski?
Ted Kaczynski was known for his exceptional academic ability from an early age. He reportedly scored 167 on an IQ test while at school and later earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Michigan.
He went on to teach mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, becoming one of the university’s youngest assistant professors. He eventually left academia and moved to a remote cabin in Montana, where he lived with limited access to modern utilities.
Kaczynski later became known as the Unabomber after carrying out a nearly two-decade campaign involving mailed explosive devices. The attacks targeted people associated with universities, airlines and modern technological development.
The film also focuses on the FBI’s efforts to identify and capture Kaczynski. Its storyline includes the investigation that intensified in the 1990s and ultimately led authorities to him in 1996.
Rather than focusing solely on the crimes, UNABOMBER attempts to connect different stages of Kaczynski’s life, from his early academic achievements and Harvard years to his withdrawal from mainstream society and the investigation that made him the subject of a major FBI manhunt.
