LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has inaugurated green electric bus services in five districts, expanding the provincial government’s public transport programme beyond major urban centres. Maryam Nawaz is the current chief minister of Punjab.

The new electric buses have begun operating in Layyah, Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara and Murree, providing residents with air-conditioned and lower-cost public transport options.

Speaking at the launch, the chief minister described the programme as the largest public transport initiative in Pakistan’s history and said buses worth Rs80 billion had been procured for the project.

Maryam Nawaz said she was pleased that commuters in the five districts would now have access to comfortable, air-conditioned buses during the summer.

She said the provincial government intended to extend dignified and affordable public transport services to cities across Punjab.

According to the chief minister, another 1,500 buses are expected to be introduced during 2026 as part of the expansion programme.

The Punjab government has set a target of operating 5,000 buses across the province within five years, she added.

The electric bus initiative is aimed at improving urban and intercity mobility while reducing dependence on conventional fuel-powered public transport.
