KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to launch 100 new bus routes under a public-private partnership model and introduce an electric vehicle taxi service in Karachi as part of efforts to modernise public transport.

The decisions were made during a Transport Department meeting chaired by Sindh Transport and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. The meeting reviewed projects aimed at providing safer, modern and more reliable transport facilities to the public.

Memon said special bus routes would be introduced through public-private partnership and handed over to private investors and companies through auction or other competitive processes.

He said modern air-conditioned electric buses would operate on the new routes, improving commuting facilities for citizens and creating new investment opportunities.

The meeting also decided to launch a new Peoples Bus Service route from Larkana to Qamber. Memon said the route would benefit thousands of passengers, improve connectivity between the two districts and support commercial activity.

He directed officials to complete the administrative and operational arrangements for the route at the earliest.

EV Taxi Service And Double-Decker Buses

Memon said an environment-friendly EV taxi service would soon be launched in Karachi to provide modern transport options and help reduce pollution.

He also said more double-decker buses would soon arrive in Karachi and directed officials to finalise planning for new routes.

The meeting expressed satisfaction over rising ridership on the Green Line BRT. Memon said daily ridership had reached 81,000 on the Green Line and 9,800 on the Orange Line.

He said the special Pink Bus on the Green Line had received a strong response from women commuters.

Memon also warned that misuse of the Pink Scooty project would not be allowed. He directed authorities to seize vehicles if men were found using Pink Scooties and take legal action against anyone changing their colour or wrapping them.
