KARACHI: Pakistani actor Mahira Khan has opened up about her pregnancy, saying she never expected to become a mother again at this stage of her life and describing the experience as an emotional and physical change.

Mahira recently announced on Instagram that she is expecting her second child, prompting an outpouring of congratulations and good wishes from fans and fellow celebrities. She later discussed the pregnancy and her experiences during an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mahira Khan reflects on an unexpected new chapter

Speaking to a female journalist, Mahira said she had been living with a sense of independence and had imagined her life taking a particular direction. Her son had grown older, while she was focused on her work, routine and personal life.

She said becoming a mother again after several years had brought an unexpected emotional shift and reminded her that people can make plans for their lives, but circumstances can unfold differently.

Mahira added that the experience had taught her that it is not always necessary to control everything or have an answer to every question, saying sometimes people have to allow life to surprise them and accept what is beyond their control.

‘I am a different woman at 41’

Reflecting on becoming a mother for the first time, Mahira said she was 24 years old when her first child was born. At 41, she said, she is physically and emotionally a different person.

She recalled approaching motherhood in her 20s with a certain innocence and fewer concerns about potential difficulties. This time, she said, pregnancy has been more physically challenging.

Mahira explained that there are days when her body does not allow her to do what her mind wants. She has traditionally been accustomed to staying busy, working, travelling and managing several responsibilities at once.

She also described the emotional experience as different because she now has greater awareness and understanding of life, which can bring more concern as well as appreciation.

‘Joy comes with fear and exhaustion’

Mahira said her second pregnancy has brought immense happiness alongside feelings of fear, exhaustion and vulnerability.

Mahira was previously married to Ali Askari in 2007. Their son, Azlan, was born on September 15, 2009, and the couple divorced in 2016.

She later married businessman Salim Karim in Bhurban in October 2023.
