Sri Lankan off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana has achieved a unique milestone by claiming the first hat-trick of 2025 in the second ODI against New Zealand.
The Sri Lankan cricket team is currently on a tour of New Zealand, where the second match of a three-match ODI series was played on Wednesday. The rain-affected match was limited to 37 overs per inning, with New Zealand opting to bat first and scoring 255 runs for 9 wickets.
Theekshana delivered a brilliant performance, taking 4 wickets, including a hat-trick. He dismissed New Zealand’s captain Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith in the final two balls of the 35th over and then sent back Matt Henry on the first ball of the 37th over.
This hat-trick made Theekshana the first Sri Lankan bowler to take a hat-trick in New Zealand, and he is also the seventh Sri Lankan bowler to achieve this feat in ODI cricket.
