ROSARIO: Jorge Messi, the father of Argentina and Inter Miami star Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness, according to family sources and multiple reports. He passed away in Rosario, Argentina, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Jorge Messi had remained an important figure throughout his son’s football career. He supported Lionel from his early days in Argentina and accompanied him during his move to Barcelona, later serving as his representative for many years.
Jorge Messi Played Key Role in Lionel’s Career
Lionel Messi has previously spoken about the importance of his father’s opinion, recalling how he would seek Jorge’s assessment after matches during his childhood and early career.
Jorge spent his final months receiving medical care while also staying at home with his family in Rosario. The family had previously confirmed that he was undergoing treatment for an undisclosed health condition and had requested privacy amid speculation about his health.
Earlier False Reports About His Death
Jorge Messi’s death had previously been the subject of false reports during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In June, the Messi family publicly rejected those reports and said Jorge was under medical observation and recovering from a health issue.
An Argentine television presenter, Florencia Peña, later resigned after falsely announcing on air that Jorge Messi had died.
Jorge Messi’s death marks a major personal loss for Lionel Messi, who had remained closely connected to his father throughout his career.
