LAHORE, Apr 23 — More than 1,000 indigenous trees were planted in two public parks in Lahore on Earth Day as part of a community-led plantation drive organized by Bargad in collaboration with FAST Cables and the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA).
The activity took place at Ghazi Park and Maryam Park in Green Town, where local residents joined volunteers in tree plantation, park cleaning, and restoration efforts aimed at improving urban green spaces and environmental conditions.
Community participation and coordination
The plantation drive was conducted under Bargad’s campaign “جتھے ہریالی، اوتھے خوشحالی,” with coordination support from PHA. Organizers said the initiative focused on increasing green cover through indigenous tree species while encouraging community ownership of public spaces.
Residents participated alongside volunteers in cleaning and restoring the parks, reflecting local engagement in environmental activities.
Organisers and local involvement
The initiative was led by Bargad representatives Rabia Dar and Sahar Sohail, along with community mobilizer Mubarak Aftab Gill. Members of the Local Peace Structure (LPS) and the Inclusive Climate Action Network (I-CAN) also contributed to the activity.
Several community members, including Anees Bano, Haroon, Nargis Bano, Ch. Irfan, Maryam, Ruksana Fakhar, Sana Kashif, Pastor Kashif, and Aman Committee Chairman Sabir Shah, took part in the drive. Local elder Baba Hidayat was also present, indicating community support for the initiative.
Focus on urban environment
The plantation activity forms part of broader efforts to promote urban greenery and environmental awareness through community-led action. Organizers said such initiatives aim to improve public spaces while contributing to climate and sustainability goals at the local level.
