The University of Karachi has formed a three-member committee to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into complaints concerning the second-year examination results and mark sheets of law colleges affiliated with the university.
The committee comprises representatives associated with the Supreme Court, Sindh High Court and the federal Higher Education Commission (HEC). It has been tasked with examining the complaints, reviewing available evidence and records, and submitting a fact-based report to the university administration.
The investigation will include consultations with all relevant stakeholders, including affected students, teachers who checked the examination papers, and officials responsible for reviewing answer scripts following scrutiny applications. Committee members will also visit the university’s examination department and hold discussions with the Controller of Examinations and other relevant officials.
Some students had raised concerns over alleged discrepancies and errors in the announced results, claiming that they had passed their examinations but were declared unsuccessful in the issued mark sheets. The affected candidates subsequently submitted scrutiny applications, maintaining that they were entitled to be declared successful in their BA/LLB examinations.
Under the existing rules, the scrutiny process is limited to checking the recounting and totaling of marks. It does not include the re-evaluation of answer scripts. In view of the legal and administrative aspects of the complaints, the university decided to arrange an independent investigation.
The committee consists of retired Justice Zia Pervez, retired Justice Nadeem Akhtar and Dr Nazir Hussain of the federal Higher Education Commission.
Its first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at 12 noon at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat. The committee will review the relevant records and evidence before submitting its findings to the university administration.
Separately, the university has decided to prepare a comprehensive academic calendar for its affiliated law colleges. The calendar will cover teaching, academic and examination activities throughout the year and will be presented for approval at the next meeting of the university’s Academic Council, scheduled to take place this month.
The University of Karachi has reiterated its commitment to transparency, fairness and accountability in academic and administrative matters, saying it aims to uphold merit, discourage irregularities and take timely corrective measures wherever necessary.
The university said the formation of independent inquiry committees and efforts to strengthen its complaint-resolution mechanism reflect its commitment to protecting students’ confidence and maintaining the credibility of its examination and assessment system.
