A private hospital in Karachi’s Korangi area has been sealed by the Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) after a 20-day-old infant was diagnosed with mpox, with an investigation reportedly linking the infection to contaminated equipment used during the child’s circumcision.

According to the report, the District Health Officer (DHO) Korangi launched an investigation after the infant tested positive for mpox. Officials found that the circumcision had been performed at a facility where the equipment was reportedly contaminated with the virus. The infant’s sample was tested at Dow Laboratory, where the infection was confirmed.

Illegal Hospital Sealed in Korangi

The action was taken against a private hospital located in the Malir 15 area, within the jurisdiction of Saudabad Police Station. The SHCC carried out the operation in coordination with the DHO Korangi and SSP Korangi.

The hospital was reportedly operating illegally, with unqualified staff allegedly performing circumcisions on children.

Staff Resisted Operation

According to the report, hospital staff resisted the sealing operation and called other associates to the site. The healthcare commission subsequently sought assistance from district police to complete the inspection and enforcement action.

The individuals involved reportedly fled the premises later.

Poor Infection-Control Measures Cited

The action was reportedly prompted by poor hygiene conditions, inadequate infection-prevention and control measures, and alleged unauthorised medical activities at the facility.

Officials said the conditions posed significant risks to patient safety and public health.
