Is Someone Reading Your WhatsApp Chats?

ISLAMABAD, October 1, 2026: Have you ever used WhatsApp on an office computer, a friend’s laptop or another device and later forgotten to log out? A seemingly minor oversight could leave your WhatsApp account accessible from a device you no longer use.

WhatsApp’s Linked Devices feature allows users to access their accounts from computers, tablets and other supported devices. However, an unfamiliar or forgotten linked device could potentially give someone access to your WhatsApp chats.

What Is WhatsApp’s Linked Devices Feature?

Linked Devices allows users to connect their WhatsApp account to additional devices alongside their primary phone.

Once a device has been linked, it does not necessarily need the primary phone to remain continuously online for WhatsApp to work on that device. This means an old computer or other previously linked device could continue to have access even when your phone is with you.

How to Check Which Devices Are Linked

On Android:

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
  • Select Linked Devices.

On iPhone:

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Linked Devices.

You will see a list of devices currently linked to your WhatsApp account.

What If You See an Unknown Device?

If you find a computer, phone or other device that you do not recognize, do not ignore it.

Tap the unfamiliar device and select Log Out. This will end that device’s access to your WhatsApp account.

Does an Unknown Device Mean Your WhatsApp Was Hacked?

Not necessarily.

An unfamiliar device may simply be one that you previously linked yourself—for example, an office computer, shared laptop or another device—and later forgot to disconnect.

However, if you see a device you have never used or authorized, it should be treated seriously. Someone gaining brief physical access to your unlocked phone could potentially attempt to link another device to your account.

How to Keep Your WhatsApp Account Secure

Security experts recommend regularly checking the Linked Devices section and immediately logging out devices you do not recognize.

Users should also:

  • Never enter a verification or pairing code at the request of an unknown person.
  • Do not approve a device-linking request that you did not initiate.
  • Use biometric security, such as fingerprint or Face ID, to protect your phone.
  • Enable WhatsApp’s two-step verification.
  • Always log out after using WhatsApp on shared or office computers.

Regularly reviewing linked devices is a simple way to identify forgotten connections and help keep your private WhatsApp conversations secure.
