Iranian state media says the six-day ceremonies drew record crowds, but the attendance figures have not been independently verified.

Tehran: Iranian state media has claimed that between 41 million and 43 million people participated in the six-day funeral ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, describing the gatherings as among the largest public events in the country’s history.

According to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, the funeral processions of Ali Khamenei were the “largest funeral and public mourning gatherings in world history.” However, the figures released by Iranian authorities have not been independently verified by international organizations or neutral sources.

The reported attendance figures covered condolence ceremonies held across five major cities in Iran and Iraq, including Tehran, Qom, Najaf, Karbala, and Mashhad, where large crowds reportedly gathered during different stages of the mourning period.

The official funeral ceremonies began last week at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla religious complex, where thousands of mourners reportedly gathered to pay their final respects. Later, funeral processions and memorial events were held in several cities, with Iranian media reporting widespread public participation.

Iranian authorities said extensive security arrangements were put in place during the ceremonies as crowds gathered to express condolences and pay tribute to the country’s religious and political leadership.

Despite the government’s claims of record-breaking attendance, no independent verification of the reported numbers has been provided, and no international monitoring organization has released official crowd estimates.

Political analysts said the funeral events carried significant religious, political, and symbolic importance for Iran, with the leadership presenting the large gatherings as a demonstration of national unity and public support.
