Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro reportedly survived an unusual drop from more than 100,000 feet (30,607 metres) during a test over Kiruna, Sweden, with the device remaining operational after landing.
According to reports, the phone was carried into the stratosphere by a balloon while enclosed in a new Air-X phone case developed by mobile accessories company RhinoShield. The test reportedly took the device to an altitude of 100,418 feet, more than three times the typical cruising altitude of commercial passenger aircraft.
25-Minute Fall Through Extreme Conditions
During the experiment, the iPhone 17 Pro remained in the air for approximately 25 minutes, while temperatures reportedly fell to as low as -60°C.
The device was not equipped with a parachute, heating system or special landing cushion for the descent.
The phone eventually landed in a frozen lake in a difficult-to-access area. A search and rescue team located it approximately five hours later.
Phone Reportedly Remained Fully Functional
According to a RhinoShield spokesperson, the phone was found in working condition after recovery. The screen and body reportedly showed no visible scratches, and the device remained switched on and could still be used to make calls.
The test was conducted as a demonstration of the protection offered by the RhinoShield case, while the reported record relates to the circumstances of the high-altitude drop.
