A social media alert generated by Instagram helped police in the Indian city of Meerut locate and assist a young man who was reportedly in a life-threatening situation following a post that raised concerns about self-harm.

The incident took place in the Sardhana area of Meerut, where authorities responded after receiving an automated warning from Meta’s safety monitoring system. Officials said the case highlights the growing role of technology in identifying potential mental health emergencies and enabling rapid intervention.

According to Indian media reports, the young man uploaded a video to Instagram showing himself consuming a white liquid. The post included a message suggesting emotional distress following the end of a personal relationship.

Meta’s automated detection system reportedly flagged the content and sent an alert to the social media monitoring centre at police headquarters. Authorities said the notification was received at 6:53 p.m.

Using available information, officials traced the individual’s location and mobile phone number before notifying local police in Meerut. A police team reached the residence and found the young man in critical condition.

Police said a bottle containing the white liquid was recovered from the scene. With assistance from family members, the individual was transported to a hospital, where timely medical treatment helped save his life.

Technology-Assisted Intervention

During preliminary questioning, the young man told investigators that he had been experiencing severe emotional stress after the end of a relationship.

Police officials said a coordination mechanism has been in place between Meta and Indian authorities since 2022, allowing alerts to be issued when social media activity indicates a potential risk of self-harm.

According to officials, more than 3,000 lives have been saved through such alerts between January 2023 and May 2026, demonstrating the impact of rapid digital reporting systems and emergency response efforts.
