The ICC’s revised qualification system has significantly increased the importance of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier, with the tournament winner earning direct entry to the World Cup’s main stage.
Under the new format, the champion of the 10-team qualifying event will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup and avoid the additional Super Series stage that other qualifying teams must navigate.
Direct World Cup Spot At Stake
According to reports, the 2027 World Cup Qualifier is expected to be held in early 2027, although the host nation and official schedule have yet to be announced.
The competition is expected to follow a format similar to the 2023 Qualifier, featuring 10 teams divided into two groups, followed by a Super Six stage to determine the final standings.
How Teams Will Qualify
Under the ICC’s new qualification pathway, the top eight teams in the ODI rankings as of September 2026, along with co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will qualify automatically for the 2027 World Cup.
The winner of the World Cup Qualifier will join them in the main tournament.
Teams finishing second, third and fourth in the Qualifier will advance to a Super Series, where only one side will secure the remaining World Cup berth. The other two teams will be eliminated after the additional stage.
The 10-team Qualifier is expected to include the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations, the top four teams from ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, and four teams progressing through the Qualifier Play-off.
