Islamabad Chief Commissioner, Inspector General of Police and other senior officials were also present.
Laiba Ejaz, a gold medallist from the International Islamic University Islamabad, had died after allegedly being defrauded of millions of rupees in connection with arrangements to send students to the United States.
According to police, the main suspect in the case, Noman, was killed in an armed attack while being taken by police for recovery of evidence in the Ramna area.
Police said four unidentified attackers riding two motorcycles opened fire in an apparent attempt to free the suspect. Noman was injured in the shooting and later died. The police team remained safe due to protective measures, while a search operation for the suspect’s alleged accomplices was under way.
Police said Noman had allegedly defrauded students of Rs9 million by promising to facilitate their travel to the United States for education. Sources also claimed that he had allegedly committed similar fraud against several women and that allegations of sexual harassment involving 26 women had also emerged.
Police said Noman had confessed to defrauding Laiba after his arrest. According to the investigation, he allegedly contacted Laiba while impersonating her friend Aiza and also created a fake Gmail account using the name of Aiza’s brother, Azhar.
Investigators said the suspect allegedly used the two fake accounts to remain in contact with Laiba and prepared fake documents related to her student visa.
Police also said the suspect allegedly used artificial intelligence to prepare the fraudulent visa documents. Some of the chats between Laiba and the suspect were recovered, while Noman’s mobile phone was sent to a forensic laboratory for further investigation.
