The return marks the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year after prolonged disruption caused by the war. Many children are attending classes without basic supplies such as notebooks, pens and school uniforms, while families face severe economic hardship.
Schools Damaged Across Gaza
UNICEF reports that around 98% of schools in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. The agency has also reported that more than 658,000 school-age children have been out of regular education, while earlier assessments put the number of children missing formal in-person schooling at around 700,000.
With many school buildings unsafe or unavailable, temporary classrooms have been established in tents and other makeshift facilities. UNICEF has been working with education partners to expand temporary learning opportunities and help children return to face-to-face education.
Education Resumes Amid Severe Challenges
Teachers and students are returning to learning despite shortages of classrooms, educational materials and other essential infrastructure. Online learning also continues for children who cannot attend in person because of displacement or damaged facilities.
The reopening of schools provides thousands of children with an opportunity to resume structured learning after years of disruption, although significant challenges remain across Gaza’s education system.
