Paraguay midfielder Miguel Almirón became the first player to receive a red card under a newly enforced rule during the FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match against Turkey.
The incident occurred in the closing moments of the first half when Almirón was speaking with Turkish player Mert Müldür and covered his mouth during the exchange, which was later deemed a violation of the new regulations.
VAR review leads to red card decision
According to match reports, Müldür immediately alerted a nearby official, prompting further review of the incident. Following a VAR check, referee Ivan Barton issued a straight red card to Almirón.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Paraguay maintained a 1–0 lead at the time, which they successfully held until the end of the match.
Debate over decision
The decision has sparked discussion within football circles, although officials have maintained that the ruling was consistent with the newly introduced rules, which were applied during the match without exception.
