Ebola Death Toll in DR Congo Rises to 600 as WHO Expands Response
The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) has risen to 600, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO). The outbreak has spread across multiple provinces, prompting continued international health efforts to contain the virus.
The current outbreak has also affected neighboring Uganda, where two deaths have been reported. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation as clinical trials for a vaccine and treatment are underway in eastern Congo.
Outbreak Continues to Spread
The WHO said the outbreak has resulted in 600 deaths in eastern DR Congo. Just three days earlier, reported fatalities stood at 500, while 1,759 infections had been confirmed.
The outbreak began in May 2026 and has affected four provinces. Officials say Ituri Province in northeastern Congo remains the hardest-hit area.
No Approved Vaccine or Specific Treatment
According to the WHO, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for the virus responsible for the current outbreak.
However, clinical trials evaluating a vaccine and potential treatment have begun in the city of Bunia in eastern Congo as health authorities seek to contain the disease and improve patient outcomes.
International Health Response
The WHO and partner organizations continue to support surveillance, patient care and outbreak response efforts in affected areas.
Health officials are urging continued monitoring and rapid intervention to limit further transmission of the virus in the region.
