South Africa’s former captain Faf du Plessis has revealed that he reached out to Australia’s Steve Smith during the 2018 Cape Town Test ball-tampering scandal, offering support as the Australian captain faced intense criticism.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s ‘Cricketers on Cricketers’ video series, du Plessis said Smith’s situation reminded him of the criticism he faced in 2016 over an incident involving the condition of the ball during the Hobart Test.

Du Plessis said he felt Smith was under significant pressure after accepting responsibility during a press conference in Cape Town. He subsequently sent Smith a message, encouraging him to remain strong and assuring him of his support.

The former South African captain also recalled that Smith had previously taken a supportive stance toward him in 2016 rather than strongly criticising him. According to du Plessis, that gesture earned Smith respect from the South African team.

What Happened to Steve Smith?

The Cape Town ball-tampering scandal led to Smith being banned from international cricket for one year. He was also removed from Australia’s captaincy following the incident.

Du Plessis’ comments highlight the support he offered Smith during one of the most difficult periods of the Australian cricketer’s career.
