KARACHI: The Aga Khan University has appointed cancer biologist and academic leader Dr Kulsoom Ghias as Dean of its Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
AKU announced the appointment on July 27, describing Dr Ghias as an advocate of interdisciplinary education who has consistently worked to connect scientific learning with the humanities and social sciences.
Dr Ghias brings extensive experience in teaching, biomedical research, academic leadership and curriculum development. Before taking up the new role, she served as chair of AKU’s Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences and held the Feerasta Family Endowed Chair.
Her academic journey includes a liberal arts education at the University of Virginia, doctoral and postdoctoral training at Northwestern University’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, and an Advanced Diploma in Health Professions Education from AKU.
Throughout her career, Dr Ghias has led academic initiatives, strengthened research capacity, developed institutional partnerships and promoted innovation in teaching.
“Together, we will advance the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as a diverse, dynamic and innovative academic community where learner-centred education, interdisciplinary research and meaningful partnerships empower ethical, pluralistic and socially accountable leaders,” Dr Ghias said.
Focus on Research, Academic Growth and Partnerships
Her initial priorities include expanding academic programmes, building a stronger research culture, investing in faculty and student development, strengthening governance and developing new institutional partnerships.
AKU said her appointment marked a new chapter for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, whose mission centres on interdisciplinary thinking, student-focused learning and research addressing major social challenges.
Dr Ghias has also contributed to scholarship linking medical education with the humanities and social sciences, reflecting her long-standing commitment to broad-based and interdisciplinary learning.
AKU Pays Tribute to Inaugural Dean
The university also thanked Dr Stephen Lyon, the Faculty’s inaugural dean, for his role in establishing the institution and shaping its academic identity during its formative years.
AKU said his leadership and dedication had laid a strong foundation for the Faculty’s future growth and development.
