The final prayer of Hazrat Usman (RA) remains a timeless lesson in unity, patience, and leadership for Muslims across generations.
History remembers great leaders for their achievements, but it immortalizes extraordinary individuals for the values they uphold in their most difficult moments. Hazrat Usman ibn Affan (RA), the third Caliph of Islam, is one such personality whose life and martyrdom continue to inspire Muslims around the world.
Known for his generosity, modesty, devotion, and unwavering commitment to Islam, Hazrat Usman (RA) dedicated his life to serving the Muslim community. Yet perhaps the most powerful lesson from his life emerged during the final hours before his martyrdom.
For weeks, rebels surrounded his residence in Madinah, cutting off food and water supplies while spreading false allegations against him. The situation grew increasingly tense as loyal companions and supporters offered to defend him against the attackers. However, Hazrat Uthman (RA) refused to allow violence that could lead to bloodshed among Muslims.
Despite being the leader of the Muslim Ummah, he chose patience over retaliation and sacrifice over civil conflict. His concern was not for his personal safety but for the unity and stability of the Muslim community.
Historical narrations describe a deeply moving scene from his final moments. As he lay wounded and drenched in blood, he did not call for revenge or punishment against his attackers. Instead, his heart remained attached to the welfare of the Ummah. The prayer on his lips was:
“O Allah, grant unity and harmony to the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him).”
These words reveal the depth of his character and the sincerity of his leadership. Even while facing death at the hands of fellow Muslims, he continued to think about the future of the Ummah rather than his personal suffering.
The martyrdom of Hazrat Usman (RA) marked one of the most significant and painful turning points in Islamic history. Although thousands of Muslims were prepared to defend him, he feared that armed resistance in Madinah could ignite a larger civil conflict. Determined to prevent Muslims from shedding each other’s blood, he chose the path of restraint.
His decision reflected an extraordinary commitment to the greater good. Few leaders in history have demonstrated such willingness to sacrifice themselves for the sake of communal harmony.
Today, the Muslim world faces challenges that often stem from division, intolerance, political rivalries, sectarian disputes, and ideological differences. In this context, the final prayer of Hazrat Uthman (RA) carries a message that remains remarkably relevant.
Unity is not simply a political objective; it is a moral responsibility. It demands patience, mutual respect, understanding, and the ability to place collective interests above personal ambitions. The life of Hazrat Uthman (RA) reminds us that preserving harmony within a community sometimes requires immense sacrifice and self-restraint.
In my view, one of the greatest challenges confronting the Muslim world today is disunity. While Muslims possess immense human resources, intellectual talent, and economic potential, these strengths are often undermined by internal divisions. The final prayer of Hazrat Usman (RA) should therefore be understood not merely as a historical account but as a timeless call for reconciliation, tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect.
Today, when the Muslim world is spread across continents and divided by borders, languages, cultures, and political systems, the message of Hazrat Uthman (RA) remains as relevant as ever. Muslims from Pakistan to Ghaza , from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia, from Iran to Morocco, and from Palestine to Kashmir are bound together by a common faith, shared values, and a collective destiny. Their struggles, hopes, and aspirations are interconnected through the bond of Islamic brotherhood.
The need of the hour is to revive the spirit of unity, compassion, and mutual respect that Hazrat Uthman (RA) prayed for in his final moments. Differences should never become barriers to cooperation, nor should disagreements weaken the bonds of the Ummah. Instead, Muslims must promote dialogue, understanding, and solidarity while working together for peace, justice, and progress.
More than fourteen centuries after his martyrdom, the final prayer of Hazrat Uthman (RA) continues to echo through history as a timeless call for unity. It reminds us that true strength lies not in division but in brotherhood, not in conflict but in harmony, and not in personal interests but in the collective well-being of the Ummah. If Muslims across the world embrace this spirit, they can build a future marked by dignity, stability, prosperity, and peace for generations to come.
May Allah unite the hearts of Muslims, strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among all Muslim nations, and guide the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) toward peace, harmony, and success. Ameen.
