British woman develops rare brain infection after India trip, doctors find 38 parasites

A British woman has been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition after returning from a trip to India, with doctors later discovering multiple parasitic larvae in her brain, according to media reports.

The case involves a 42-year-old woman from Wales who reportedly began experiencing unusual symptoms years after visiting India in 2007. The condition was later identified as neurocysticercosis, a rare parasitic infection that can affect the brain.

Symptoms appeared years after travel

The patient first experienced unusual health issues in 2010 when she reportedly noticed a large worm-like organism after using the bathroom. Although initial medical tests did not indicate serious concerns, she later developed persistent severe headaches.

In 2011, her condition worsened when she suffered her first epileptic seizure, which required emergency medical attention.

Diagnosis revealed brain infection

Scans later revealed the presence of multiple larvae in the brain. Doctors initially suspected toxoplasmosis, but further evaluation confirmed neurocysticercosis, a condition linked to tapeworm infection.

Medical experts say the disease occurs when eggs of pork tapeworm enter the human body through contaminated food or water and travel to different organs, including the brain.

Treatment and recovery

The woman underwent treatment with anti-parasitic medication and steroids during a two-week hospital stay. While the treatment helped, she later experienced complications including brain swelling and long-term neurological effects.

Doctors say all larvae eventually died without the need for surgery. The patient has since recovered significantly and has remained seizure-free since 2017, though she continues to take precautionary medication.

Health experts note that the condition remains extremely rare in the UK and is more commonly seen in regions with higher risk of tapeworm infection linked to food hygiene practice
