SWAT: A breast cancer awareness walk and ceremony were held at Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital to raise awareness about the disease and educate women about its early symptoms, timely diagnosis and treatment.

The event was attended by Chief Executive of Saidu Sharif Hospital Professor Dr Israr-ul-Haq, Professor Dr Nadeem, Professor Dr Sania Khattak, senior doctors and women from the area.

Doctors Highlight Importance of Early Diagnosis

Speaking at the event, medical experts said October is observed worldwide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging early identification of symptoms and timely medical consultation.

They noted that breast cancer is among the most common cancers affecting women globally, while early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can improve patient outcomes.

The experts urged women not to ignore unusual changes in their breasts. They identified symptoms such as a lump, unusual swelling, changes in skin texture or colour, and abnormalities in the nipple as signs that should prompt consultation with a qualified doctor.

Women Urged to Overcome Social Stigma

Doctors also encouraged women to become familiar with their bodies and remain alert to unusual changes. They clarified, however, that self-examination does not replace professional medical examinations or recommended screening procedures.

Women participating in the awareness walk stressed the need to overcome the social stigma and silence surrounding breast cancer so that health concerns can be discussed openly and medical care can be sought without unnecessary delay.

The medical experts emphasised that awareness, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential in addressing breast cancer. They urged women and their families to take potential symptoms seriously and seek professional medical advice when unusual changes are noticed.

The campaign conveyed the message that accurate information, timely medical consultation and community support can play an important role in protecting women’s health and combating breast cancer.
