BOI hosts seminar to review Pakistan–China investment and economic cooperation

Islamabad — The Board of Investment (BOI), in collaboration with China Media Group, organized a seminar in Islamabad on Monday to discuss Pakistan–China economic cooperation, with a focus on innovation, investment, and future policy coordination.

Federal Minister for Board of Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh attended the seminar as chief guest. Officials from government departments, business organizations, and policy institutions were also present.

BOI seminar focuses on economic cooperation

In his opening remarks, Tasawar Zaman, Director China Media Group, said the seminar was intended to explore new areas of cooperation between Pakistan and China. He referred to the long-standing bilateral relationship and ongoing economic engagement between the two countries.

Development experience and policy priorities discussed

Nabila Jaffer, Head of the China Program at IRS, said China’s development experience offers lessons for Pakistan, particularly in technology, innovation, and building a knowledge-based economy. She emphasized that development policies should remain focused on human development and governance.

Dr. Noor Fatima highlighted the importance of investor confidence and predictable economic policies, stating that institutional continuity plays a key role in attracting both domestic and foreign investment. She referred to the role of BOI and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in investment promotion.

Business community participation

President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sardar Tahir Mehmood, said the chamber is engaged in business-to-business facilitation, joint ventures, and support for entrepreneurship. He said ICCI is prepared to work with BOI to promote Pakistan–China trade and investment.

BOI initiatives and follow-up on China engagements

Executive Director General BOI Erfa Iqbal said the board is following up on outcomes of a business conference held in China in September, which involved more than 400 private-sector participants and resulted in 167 joint ventures and memorandums of understanding.

She also referred to the establishment of the BOI Business Facilitation Center, recent regulatory reforms, implementation of the Asaan Karobar Act, and ongoing work related to Special Economic Zones.

Remarks by the federal minister

Addressing the seminar, Federal Minister Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh said Pakistan could benefit from China’s development experience, particularly in trade and human development. He said the government is working to attract investment, especially from China, and referred to incentives offered under Special Economic Zones, including tax exemptions and duty-free import of machinery.

The seminar concluded with discussions on strengthening institutional coordination and advancing Pakistan–China economic cooperation.
