September 18, 2026: A new artificial intelligence agent called “Dobby” is offering a glimpse of a future in which users could interact with devices through a single AI interface instead of switching between multiple smartphone apps.
The AI agent was developed by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy and is designed to carry out tasks through simple instructions. According to reports, Dobby can interact with connected systems in Karpathy’s home, including music, lighting and security, without requiring separate apps for each function.
Instead of navigating individual app interfaces, Dobby can communicate directly with connected devices. The system is designed to scan local networks, identify available devices and interact with them to carry out user commands.
This approach allows the AI agent to serve as a unified interface for tasks that would traditionally require several applications. Users can give instructions conversationally while the agent handles the underlying interactions.
Karpathy has suggested that AI agents could eventually change how people interact with software, replacing some traditional app-based navigation with conversational systems capable of completing tasks on a user’s behalf.
Dobby is still in an early stage and currently requires significant technical expertise to set up and operate. Its development reflects the broader push toward autonomous AI agents designed to simplify digital interactions and reduce dependence on separate software platforms.
