8 Daily Habits That May Help You Live 20 Years Longer

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits could significantly increase life expectancy, even if those changes begin in middle age, according to a recent U.S. study. Researchers found that people who improve key aspects of their daily routine may add more than two decades to their lives while reducing the risk of chronic disease and premature death.

The findings suggest it is never too late to benefit from healthier choices. Adults in their 40s, 50s, or even 60s can still improve their long-term health by making consistent lifestyle changes, researchers said.

The study’s lead researcher, health scientist Xuan-Mai T. Nguyen, said healthy behaviors not only improve individual well-being but also contribute to better public health outcomes.

Researchers found that smoking and drug use were among the strongest predictors of premature death, increasing the risk by an estimated 30% to 45%. Chronic stress, inadequate sleep, an unhealthy diet, and excessive alcohol consumption were also associated with a higher risk of early death.

According to the study, men and women who consistently followed eight core healthy lifestyle habits from around age 40 had the potential to increase their life expectancy by approximately 23 years and 22 years, respectively.

Eight lifestyle habits that support healthy aging

1. Eat a balanced diet

A nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and lean protein helps strengthen the immune system, supports heart health, and provides essential nutrients for the body.

2. Avoid tobacco

Quitting smoking and avoiding all tobacco products can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, lung disease, and several types of cancer. Health benefits begin soon after stopping tobacco use.

3. Get enough quality sleep

Consistent, restorative sleep supports brain function, hormone balance, physical recovery, and overall health. Experts recommend making quality sleep a daily priority.

4. Stay physically active

Regular exercise, including walking, cycling, swimming, or other forms of physical activity, helps maintain a healthy weight, strengthens the heart, and improves overall fitness.

5. Manage stress

Researchers identified stress management as an important factor in healthy aging. Meditation, deep breathing, hobbies, and spending time with family and friends can help reduce stress and improve mental well-being.

6. Limit or avoid alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the liver, heart, brain, and other organs. Reducing or avoiding alcohol supports better long-term health.

7. Avoid recreational drugs

Staying away from addictive substances helps protect both physical and mental health while reducing the risk of serious long-term complications.

8. Maintain strong social connections

Positive relationships with family, friends, and the community are associated with better emotional well-being, improved mental health, and greater overall life satisfaction.
