ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has called for translating maritime policies and international commitments into practical action to unlock Pakistan’s maritime potential.
In his message on World Maritime Day 2026, being observed on September 24, Admiral Naveed Ashraf extended his felicitations to Pakistan’s maritime community and the international maritime fraternity.
He acknowledged the contributions of seafarers, maritime professionals, fishermen and coastal communities, describing their role as vital to maritime connectivity, prosperity and Pakistan’s economy.
Focus on Blue Economy
The naval chief said Pakistan’s coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone offer significant opportunities in shipping, shipbuilding, ship recycling, fisheries, offshore resources, energy, tourism and other areas linked to the Blue Economy.
He stressed that realizing this potential requires a safe, secure and sustainable maritime environment, along with effective institutional oversight, responsible practices and continued investment in maritime capacity.
Referring to this year’s World Maritime Day theme, “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” Admiral Naveed Ashraf said the focus should be on turning policies, regulations and international commitments into meaningful action.
He highlighted the need to strengthen maritime safety, protect the marine environment, enhance professional capacity and ensure that Pakistan’s maritime sector operates in line with international standards.
Pakistan Navy’s Maritime Role
Admiral Naveed Ashraf said Pakistan Navy remains committed to safeguarding the country’s maritime interests and contributing to a secure and stable maritime environment.
He said continuous surveillance of maritime areas, protection of sea lines of communication and contributions to regional maritime security help create conditions conducive to maritime trade and other economic activities.
The naval chief also stressed the importance of cooperation among government institutions, industry, academia and coastal communities.
He called for greater maritime awareness, responsible use of marine resources and stronger efforts to protect the marine environment as part of a whole-of-nation approach to sustainable maritime development.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf reaffirmed Pakistan Navy’s commitment to the International Maritime Organization’s vision of safer, secure and environmentally sustainable seas.
He said Pakistan Navy would continue supporting national efforts to develop the maritime sector, safeguard Pakistan’s maritime interests and contribute to a secure, prosperous and sustainable maritime future.
