Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and the tri-nation tournament is facing intense criticism. However, highly responsible sources within the PCB assert that the team was selected purely by the selection committee, dismissing any claims of political interference.
Sources confirm that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not interfere at any stage of the team selection process. The selectors independently decided to include Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah. While Captain Mohammad Rizwan’s opinion was considered, the final team was selected solely by the selectors, with the chairman only approving their choices.
An influential member of the selection committee has sworn that the team was chosen based on merit, firmly denying any political meddling or favoritism. He clarified that Aamer Jamal’s recent dip in form was the reason for his exclusion, while Faheem Ashraf was seen as a better option. Before joining the national team, Faheem was picked by Quetta Gladiators in the Platinum category. Khushdil Shah earned his spot due to consistent performances, and Shadab Khan was dropped because of poor form. The member criticized former cricketers who are trying to tarnish the reputation of the selection committee and the Pakistani cricket system by spreading false narratives of influence and interference.
Sources further stated that the playing XI for both the ICC Champions Trophy and the tri-nation series will be chosen by the national selectors. Head Coach Aaqib Javed, also a selector, will be part of the panel alongside Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Aleem Dar, and Hasan Cheema. Although Captain Mohammad Rizwan will be consulted, the final decision-making authority rests with the selectors.
Team Performance Improved After Selection Policy Change: Sources
According to insiders, the team’s performance has significantly improved since the selection policy was revised. Pakistan secured two Test wins against England and one against the West Indies. The ODI team clinched series victories in Australia and South Africa, indicating that the selectors’ decisions are steering the team in the right direction.
Sources also highlighted that Usman Khan was prioritized as a reserve wicketkeeper. Should Mohammad Rizwan get injured during either tournament, Usman is considered a better option compared to Haseebullah and Mohammad Haris.
Finally, sources dismissed any rumors linking players’ selection to political affiliations, emphasizing that such claims are baseless and unjustified.
