According to a website tracking WhatsApp updates, the platform has begun testing a feature to highlight unread messages and send notifications to users.
With this feature, WhatsApp’s algorithm will notify users if they have not seen or read a message from a specific contact. Unread messages will automatically be highlighted, and if they remain unchecked for a certain period, the system will send a notification, similar to how Facebook or Instagram notifies users about comments on their posts.
The feature will focus on chats where users are most active, sending prompt notifications about unread messages from those conversations.
Previously, WhatsApp also began testing status update notifications.
Both features are currently being tested on a limited number of Android users. The second phase will expand testing, with the features expected to launch early next year, though no official timeline has been confirmed yet.
