WhatsApp tests feature to read messages without blue ticks

WEB DESK, November 6, 2026: WhatsApp is testing a new feature that could allow users to preview recent messages without opening a conversation or triggering blue read receipts, offering greater flexibility in managing chats.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the feature has appeared in a beta version of WhatsApp for Android and introduces a contextual menu designed to make chat previews and management more convenient.

The development could be particularly useful for users who want to check incoming messages without immediately notifying the sender that their messages have been read.

How the new WhatsApp feature works

The feature is designed to appear when users press and hold a conversation on WhatsApp’s main chat screen.

Instead of simply displaying the existing chat management options, the updated contextual menu would include a preview card showing recent messages from the selected conversation.

This would allow users to check the latest messages without entering the chat itself.

According to the report, messages viewed through the preview card would not automatically be marked as read.

As a result, the sender would not see blue ticks merely because the recipient had viewed the message preview.

Under the proposed system, read receipts would be triggered when the user actually opens the conversation, provided read receipts are enabled.

Additional chat management shortcuts

Beyond message previews, WhatsApp is also working on several shortcuts within the contextual menu to simplify everyday chat management.

These include options to mark conversations as unread, pin important chats and archive conversations directly from the menu.

Other controls under development include locking chats, adding conversations to lists, viewing chat information and creating home screen shortcuts.

By combining these functions in one menu, WhatsApp aims to reduce the number of steps required to organise conversations.

The changes could be especially useful for people who manage numerous personal, professional or group conversations throughout the day.

When will the feature become available?

The new contextual menu is currently being tested in WhatsApp’s Android beta version and is not yet available to all users.

As with other experimental WhatsApp features, its final design and functionality may change before a wider rollout.

The company has not announced an official release date for the feature.

If introduced more broadly, the update would provide WhatsApp users with another way to manage message visibility and navigate conversations without immediately activating read receipts.
