WhatsApp has announced a new AI-powered scam alert feature designed to help users identify potentially fraudulent messages from people who are not in their contacts.
The new protection will analyse conversational patterns and language signals in messages to determine whether a chat may be linked to an online scam. If suspicious activity is detected, WhatsApp will display a warning directly inside the conversation.
The alert will only be visible to the recipient, meaning the sender will not know that WhatsApp has flagged the conversation as potentially suspicious.
How WhatsApp’s AI Scam Alerts Will Work
The WhatsApp AI scam alerts will focus on messages received from people who are not saved in a user’s contacts.
Using machine learning, the feature will examine the language and conversational patterns of incoming messages for signs commonly associated with fraudulent activity.
If the system identifies a potential scam, the user will receive an alert within the chat, allowing them to make a more informed decision before continuing the conversation.
Users who receive a warning will have the option to block or report the account. They will also be able to continue the conversation if they believe the message is legitimate.
Scam Detection Will Run on the User’s Device
WhatsApp says the feature will be optional and users will need to enable it themselves.
Once activated, the app will download a machine-learning model that will analyse relevant messages directly on the user’s device.
The on-device approach is designed to identify potentially suspicious messages without sending the contents of private conversations elsewhere for analysis.
According to WhatsApp, message content analysed by the feature will not be sent to WhatsApp, third parties or its parent company, Meta.
This approach is intended to add another layer of protection against online scams while maintaining the privacy of users’ conversations.
