Excessive use of mobile phones, social media, online shopping, video games and television can become a serious problem for some people, affecting daily routines, relationships and overall well-being. A 12-step program has been developed to help people struggling with excessive internet and technology use establish healthier boundaries.

The program, which began in 2017, now has thousands of members worldwide. Participants in different countries take part in more than 100 online and in-person meetings conducted in seven languages, where they share experiences and support one another in developing healthier technology-use habits.

Inspired by Alcoholics Anonymous

The program is based on the 12-step approach associated with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), which was founded in 1935. Similar principles have subsequently been adapted to address a range of compulsive behaviors, including overeating, excessive shopping, gambling and problematic technology use.

The internet-focused program covers behaviors such as compulsive online shopping, continuous social-media scrolling, excessive video gaming and spending too much time watching television shows.

What the 12 Steps Involve

The first step requires participants to acknowledge that they have lost control over their internet or technology use and that the behavior is negatively affecting their lives.

Participants then work toward accepting that their lives can be restored to a healthier direction and commit themselves to making more responsible decisions.

The following stages involve conducting an honest and fearless assessment of personal behavior, recognizing mistakes and shortcomings, and, when appropriate, admitting them to a trusted person. Participants are also encouraged to become willing to address their weaknesses and take practical steps to change them.

Another stage involves identifying people who may have been harmed by their behavior and, where appropriate, attempting to apologize or make amends. However, the program advises against taking this step if doing so could cause further harm.

Participants are then encouraged to regularly examine their behavior and promptly acknowledge mistakes when they occur.

The final stages focus on spiritual practices, which may include prayer, meditation or other forms of reflection, as a way of strengthening personal awareness and maintaining a healthier sense of direction.

Continuing the Recovery Process

The program encourages participants to share the experiences and insights they gain with others who are struggling with excessive technology or internet use.

It also emphasizes continuing to apply the principles in everyday life, making healthier technology habits an ongoing process rather than a one-time change.
