Turkmenistan is set to become the first Central Asian nation to gain access to the Gwadar port through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the two countries prepare to finalize the deal.
Pakistan and Turkmenistan are pursuing several joint projects, including the TAPI pipeline, a railway line and an optical link connecting South and Central Asia. A government committee is currently reviewing a draft agreement between Gwadar Port and Turkmenbashi Port.
The agreement will be overseen by the Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives with the support of the Ministry of Commerce, Finance and Maritime Affairs. The aim of the agreement is to strengthen regional cooperation and optimize port capacities for goods transit.
