Wilmington: Donald Trump held an outdoor rally in New York on Saturday, his first campaign event since the crime spree, due to bad weather.
Thousands of fans gathered at the airport in Wilmington, North Carolina, when the game was called 30 minutes before kickoff.
“We want to make sure everyone is safe above all else, and that’s why they’re asking people to evacuate the site and seek shelter,” Trump said on the loudspeaker as clouds darkened and lightning flashed. .
“This is a pretty big storm. So if you don’t mind, I guess we’ll just have to take a rain check. I’m so sorry.”
Trump once again promised a rally “bigger and better” there, and the disappointed crowd quickly dispersed.
The move is scheduled to take place Monday morning after jury selection in Trump’s “good money” trial in New York.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of business fraud as part of a scheme to cover up payments to porn stars to prevent revelations of sexism before defeating Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump has denounced the former US president as a political “witch hunt” and many of his supporters agree.
“It’s … not really a crime. It’s just a political thing,” said Grace Miller, 58, a marcher from North Carolina. “You can’t just criminalize things. I mean, they think we’re stupid, but we’re not.”
“Chep was trying to do everything to prevent him from working,” Prater, 29, said.
In a post on his Social Truth platform, Trump reiterated that the lawsuit has hindered his ability to campaign.
While his speech in North Carolina is expected to follow a similar tone, New York Judge Juan Marcha has ordered not to attack witnesses, prosecutors or relatives of court officials – a Republican ban. “It’s not fair,” he said.
Democrats are hoping to take back North Carolina, a battleground state, after Trump’s victories in 2016 and 2020.
Joe Biden lost the state by just 75,000 votes in 2020, the same year he won re-election as the Democratic governor of North Carolina.
Trump is likely to face trial in New York within weeks and is awaiting indictment in Washington, Georgia and Florida – where Biden’s involvement has boosted the campaign.
